Companies Promoting Brand Using Social Media
"What can we do with social media or web 2.0? ", that is a very common question. Try a search on Google for social media marketing and there will be over 200,000,000 results. I thought I'd talk about some companies I think have done a good job using social media to promote their brand. (These are in no particular order.)
Sharpie pens - they created a community with blogs and galleries for people to share their passion about art they have created with sharpies. Some people posted pictures of their pants others posted videos of their 360 controller. Sharpie also links to Flickr & has a youtube channel. They are linking to others who have created art work with Sharpies instead of just holding onto the work them selves. Some of the coolest art is not Sharpies, but belongs to artists.
Cisco - They have a comprehensive communication strategy to get new product buzz in social media. This led to one of their best launches of a product this year. They used blogs, virtual events and video (of course the video is taken with Cisco's Flip video camera). They blog about and take videos of almost all events even "closed" channel/vendor events. They also use twitter, very effectively; CTO Padmasree Warrior has over 900,000 followers. The marketing department puts out suggestions to their executives informing them of upcoming events. They let their executives determine what they want to tweet about and what to put in their tweet. They also use twitter to get feedback from their followers and use that feedback in events.
Burger King - In January of 2009 they created a campaign based on sacrificing 10 Facebook friends to get a free whopper. The program was maybe too successful; it was "banned" by Facebook. They did get over 200,000 sacrifices in couple of weeks.
President Obama's 2008 campaign - They used web 2.0 (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube ...) to engage the public and volunteers. Social media was used to stay in touch with interested people and keep the campaign's message fresh in everyone's mind. They also were able to convert web 2.0 use into dollars in the form of campaign contributions.

Sure social media is a success for those large companies. Everyone wants to here what thy have to say. That is why they have hundreds of thousands of followers. As a small business owner, I'm never going to get 1% of that traffic.
