Using SEO Tools with Facebook

Facebook Ad Campaign Filters
You are creating a Facebook (FB) ad campaign, and want to select the filter terms to get to your target audience. What words should you choose?

How to use Facebook Likes & Interests

If you have ever used Facebook to create an ad, then you know that they offer several options to help filter their audience:
  • Location ( Country, State and City)
  • Demographics (Age & Gender)
  • Likes & Interests (L&I)
  • Other Advanced Options (Education, Groups, Language and Relationship)
Picking the first two options is relatively straight forward, Likes and Interests can be a bit harder.

If you enter a term into the L&I field Facebook helps by offering type-head suggestions. For example if you begin to type automobile, by the time you type in "autom" FB will show several words that begin with those letters.

While this makes it easier to enter words, it does not help you figure out what words to use for filter terms.

Using SEO Tools
Luckily there are tools available to help select filtering words. The SEO tools that we use for picking keywords, can be used for helping us select filter terms. Google's Keyword tool is a free tool that is probably familiar to most people who have done SEO.

If you enter the term "Automobile" into this tool  it will offer a list related terms that have been searched on Google:
  • Electric Automobile
  • Green Automobile
  • Automobile Repair
  • Garage
  • Classic Automobile.
Those terms could be used for filter terms in Facebook.

Combining SEO keywords tools and FB ads can help improve your campaign's reach and find a better target audience.
